WW1 AUSTRALIAN SPECIAL RAIDING BATTALION MILITARY MEDAL GROUP TO LANCE CORPORAL CHARLES STEWART
Special Raiding Battalion Australian Military Medal and British War Medal.
Military Medal Group of two to 1004 Lance Corporal Charles Stewart, 37 Battalion, A.I.F. Military Medal: 1004 **- L.CPL-C. STEWART. 37/AUST:INF., British War Medal: 1004 L/CPL C. STEWART. 37 BN. AIF.
Also entitled to the Victory Medal. Partial erasure of details after number and before '-L.CPL' on M.M.
Enough can be seen to see that the original naming was 'PTE-L.CPL'. Obviously, Stewart wished only his NCO rank on the medal! Citation reads - "In the Operation at CLERY on the 29th/30th August 1918, this Non-Commissioned Officer, showed great courage and initiative. As an enemy party of about 20 bombers advanced on and bombed the post which he commanded. He continually kept his Lewis Gun in action forcing the enemy bombers to take shelter and organising his Gun Team as a bombing party rushed forward with them succeeding in completely destroying the enemy bombing party. He did very good work in previous Operations at BRAY and SUZANNE as No. 2 of a Lewis Gun team."
Charles Stewart enlisted on 14th February 1916. He was Wounded in Action three times including being gassed on the third occasion. In February 1917, the 37th Battalion provided 400 troops, with a similar party from the 38th Battalion to form a "Special Raiding Battalion". After several weeks of training the force staged a single 35-minute raid on the night of 27th February and was then disbanded. Stewart was Wounded in Action during this raid and twice more before the end of the War. Condition NEF. Nice toning to the Medals.
Includes a lot of research including papers on CD and have full file on CD and 37 Battalion War Diary.
